RV Linker Product Review, December 2002
One of the biggest issues modern RVers wrestle with today is this: just HOW do we get reliable internet access while on the road? While this problem impacts almost all RVers to one extent or another, it hits the working RVer especially hard. A simple assumption of business today is that if you don't have reliable email access, you just can't be very serious about your business.
Thousands of RVers have tried to solve the email/internet dilemma by using cell phones, stand-alone email "machines," calling cards at truck stop phone lines, rec hall modem rooms, and even acoustic couplers. Unfortunately, by and large, the experience has been less than pleasurable.
Until now. Fortunately, RVers now have a better option. And that better option is an always-on satellite internet connection.
MotoSat's DataStorm internet satellite system offers an always-on, TWO-WAY satellite system specifically for RV's. The DataStorm system accomodates both uploads and downloads to the internet, unlike other mobile satellite systems that require a cell phone or land line for uploads to the internet (i.e. so that you retrieve email via satellite but have to send it by cell phone or land line). The DataStorm's internet programming is also provided for a flat monthly fee, with NO PER-MINUTE (or per-megabyte) charges.
The DataStorm is a fully automatic dish that can be used for satellite internet access alone OR can be equipped with a second LNB to allow reception of DirecTV satellite television (with a subscription to DirecTV service, of course).
When you're parked and ready to deploy the satellite antenna, it's a simple matter of clicking the "Find Satellite" button on your computer. The 39" DataStorm dish will automatically raise itself and home in on the strongest signal available. The data signals will then be passed from the satellite antenna to a satellite modem and then to your computer. And, if you've chosen to add a second LNB for satellite television, your family can enjoy their favorite TV programming from the same dish at the same time; neither system interferes with the other.
It has been our experience that typical actual upload/download speeds using a conventional dialup connection via 56K modem will be about 42Kbps up and down.
Upload speeds for the DataStorm satellite system approximate that of a fast dialup connection.
But download speeds can approach a blistering 800 Kbps--almost 20 times faster than conventional dialup speeds. [NOTE: And sometimes, we've downloaded even faster. A digital family video was emailed to us along with the warning that it would take more than 20 minutes to download. Our DataStorm downloaded the entire video in approximately 45 SECONDS!]
